The four lessons in this noncredit course will help you find your way through this confusing landscape, and help you see just how significant philanthropy has been both throughout history and in the lives of people around the globe today.

    Philanthropy is really good at inventing new kinds of organizations and creating new partnerships and collaborations. This means there is a tremendous diversity of institutions in the field, and they are connected to each other in myriad ways. This noncredit course explores the philanthropic ecosystem, including the many different types of grantmaking institutions and how these interact with government, business, and one another.

    Ethics is a constant, fundamental concern at the very heart of philanthropy, not because people in this sector are particularly unethical, but rather because philanthropy carries a special ethical and moral status in our society. Philanthropy expresses our most cherished values, works to achieve the public good, and does vital work in our communities. We hold philanthropy to a higher ethical standard. This noncredit course investigates some ethical questions at the heart of philanthropic practice, and offers frameworks for addressing these questions.

    We live in a time of tremendous – and exciting – change and innovation in philanthropy. Many of the accepted norms are being challenged, and new strategies and methods for giving are being created. The lessons in this noncredit course introduce you to many of these transformations, from the rising cohort of “next gen donors,” to the use of multiple new vehicles for good such as impact investing, to essential yet still nascent efforts to advance equity as a core practice of any philanthropy that seeks to be effective.
